Over 50: Starting a New Career is Possible

A New Career is Possible

Recently, I had to search for a new job. At 55 years old, I was a displaced educator and had to think about what to do next. Although fearful of what I thought were limited possibilities, I re-evaluated my skills. After doing so, I realized that starting a new career is possible for a person over 50 years old.

Changing careers at mid-life is not the norm; however, life sometimes throws a curve. Like many people, I planned on working with my school district until I chose to retire. Somehow our plans did not coincide. Consequently, the school district decided for me. So, I was pushed out in the cold without a plan of action. Afterward, I learned having a plan is crucial to starting a new career. Here are five things to prepare when looking to start a new career.

Update Your Resume

First, update your resume. Perhaps you thought there wasn’t a need for a new resume. You planned to remain with the same company until retirement. Some things have changed since you last looked at your resume or curriculum vitae. Research and review resume samples. Many resumes are skills based. In the past, many were experience based. Then make sure you update your list of references including email addresses and phone numbers.

Second, check resources such as associations, organizations, and network of peers. Then do not forget friends and family members. Someone within your circle of influence knows about possible job openings or other sources. More importantly, keep in contact with persons within your circle. Also, help and support others throughout your career, so they remember you when you need them most.

The Application Process

Third, as you look for a new career opportunity, the application process is online. It’s a long time since you’ve gone through a job search. Consequently, things always change. You will probably use career and job search engines such as Indeed.com, Monster, or a professional association website. Many companies use an application site called Applitrack. When completing an application online be prepared to upload documents such as your resume, reference letters, college transcripts, etc.

If after submitting your application you’re called for an interview, it will probably be via telephone, Skype, or online. Therefore, you need a desktop, laptop, tablet, or smartphone with a camera. It is normal to be nervous during the interview; accordingly, technology doesn’t change that fact.

Fourth, be open to a possible decrease in pay. A career change may mean less money. Many companies view experienced workers as expensive. It cost less to hire younger, less qualified applicants. You must decide what your threshold is or if you can afford less income. However, to get your foot in the door, you may have to accept a smaller salary. Furthermore, many positions are now remote. Many employees work from home two or three days per week. Are you willing to take a remote job?

Be Patient

Lastly, finding the perfect, new job or changing careers takes time. Be patient! If your current position or long time career is ending, fear of making ends meet is on your mind. Do not let fear push you into a wrong decision. Also, don’t think being over 50 is the end of your professional life. Take your time reflecting on what type of new career is most rewarding. Perhaps, it is time to think outside the box or go in a completely different direction. Maybe, it’s time to start your own business. Whatever you decide, remember the possibilities are endless.

  1. I started my university studies at 45 and had only finished at 52 because I worked the whole time I was doing it. 4 degrees later I am a bonafide teacher and have been helping children and adults to learn ever since. @ladyinbelgium on Instagram.
