You Need to Find a Hobby!

You Need to Find a Hobby

Has anyone ever said to you, “You need to find a hobby?” If so, what was your response? It probably went something like this. “ I know but it’s never enough time.” Or your response was, “I’m too busy taking care of everyone else. I don’t have time to take care of myself.” Well, those responses are not uncommon, but you really need to stop for a moment. However, you often wish that you had more time to do things to make you happier and more relaxed. Therefore, it means carving out some time for you. During that time, find a hobby that fits your needs and personality.

A Hobby is Not Work

A hobby is an activity or interest pursued pleasure or relaxation and not as a main occupation. Remember, work is not a hobby! Don’t get it twisted. Frequently, people will say, “Work is all I do.” That will be a big, NO! Work is something you do for a living. It is something you do for pleasure. So, you’re still asking yourself, why do you need a hobby and how do I find one. Here are a few reasons why you need a new pastime.

Reasons for Needing a Hobby

  • It helps to clear your mind. Free your mind and the rest will follow. Participating in an activity or interest that you enjoy relaxes you. A hobby lets you explore your interest without any pressure. Whether it’s fishing, arts & crafts, bowling or sailing, it’s of your own choosing. You chose a particular hobby because it ignites a passion in you.
  • A hobby can fire up your creativity. Often times, your professional life doesn’t revolve around you being creative. Or your day-to-day tasks don’t allow for much of a creative space. A hobby can get the creative juices flowing inside of you. The juices are bottled up inside of you and ready to pop the cork. You can take a painting class, learn to tailor, take up interior design, learn a new sport or an array of other creative activities.  Find what you like and go for it.
  • Finding a hobby can open up new opportunities for you. Finding your passion or interest means exploring new opportunities, meeting new people and forming new friendships. A hobby allows you to socialize with people who are outside of your professional and personal circle. Consequently, you can find persons with like minds. It can break up the monotony of the daily grind or routines.
  • The day-to-day routines probably cause you much stress. The effect of stress causes sickness and diseases like heart disease, high blood pressure and more. What better way to relieve stress than to have an activity that relaxes you. The daily grind leaves you little time for yourself. The grind can include tasks specific to family and home life, too. Also, think about all of the time you spend picking up and dropping off kids to school, sports, dance, violin lessons and more. Don’t forget about chores like laundry, washing dishes, cooking, cleaning, etc. Wait a minute! Your life is passing you by!
  • Discover a new you by finding the perfect hobby. Who are you really under the disguise of the daily grind? If you can’t answer that, then it’s time for a change. Most of all, you don’t want your life to pass you by without having pleasures in life, good memories, and mementos.

Choose What Feels Good for You

Think about these things when searching for your new hobby. Look at what interest you. Then think about what you value the most.  While you’re thinking, ask yourself, “What are my skills?” What is your personality? Pay attention to what you’re passionate about. Go back to your childhood. Think about what excited you.  Explore new territories. Furthermore, pick what feels good for you. Then, go for it!

Finding something to fit your lifestyle and personality takes time. Then do some research. Afterward, take a class at a local art center, craft store, or join a meetup group. Furthermore, talk to your family to inform them that you need time for yourself and your new pastime. Finally, schedule the time and enjoy yourself.
